BE AN AFFILIATE - PART 1: THE BASICS.
If you think about it, when you connect to the world wide web you are looking through a small window at an enormous world. Whether looking for the best online poker site, real estate agent, or tobacco vendor too much information and too many competing businesses are often what confuses your average surfer. This is where affiliates come in. Good affiliate websites act as conduits, steering Internet traffic here and there, and often making very good money in the process. Depending on how successful your affiliate website is you can end up making a very handsome living from the companies you link your site visitors to. The process is simple; build your website, do your own research and decide which industry and which affiliate programs you want to take part in, (check our own up to date top affiliate lists here) link to those sites from yours and if your visitors click through and start spending money there, all you need to do is wait for the money to start flowing into your affiliate account. Statistics show that the best three industries as far as affiliate sites go are as follows: Online poker and other online gambling, mortgages and other loans and finally education. If you are going for any one of these big three you must make sure that your website is relevant to the industry, and not try to grab for more than one. The key here is to pick your niche and stick to it.
You can always make other websites that are affiliates for other specific niches if you find that you have the knack for it and would like to make a living out of being an affiliate. From this point onwards your main goal is to make your website as relevant to that industry, and as useful to the potential customers of that industry as is humanly possible. Content, content, content. We cannot stress enough how important it is to make sure your sites are regularly updated with fresh, unique and relevant content.
Competition and niche value are also two very important distinctions to bear in mind when deciding upon an industry that you would like to become an affiliate for. Picking an extremely specific niche market will ensure that there aren't too many people out there competing to take your customers from you, but this has to balanced out against the consideration that for there not to be so many people trying to act as affiliates for your chosen niche, it is probably not as profitable as some of the other bigger markets. Conversely, if you choose a massive market such as online poker, know that you will come up against some very stiff and savvy competition from people who have been making money from affiliate programs for much longer than you. These bigger markets do offer the potential to make enormous amounts of money, but getting a slice of that pie, even though it is much bigger, will definitely prove to be much more difficult and will require you to work much harder to get it.
In part two of this guide we will look at how you should go about choosing your industry and what to do once you're up and running to secure as big a piece of the affiliate pie as you can. See you in part 2.
